Essential Oils For Bites & Stings

An inevitable part of summer we don’t quite enjoy? The bugs and their bites! But not to worry -- we’ve put together the best essential oils for bug bites and stings, so you can make your own DIY blend and get back to enjoying summer fun.

Best Essential Oils for Bug Bites and Stings

Chamomile Roman - Its soothing effect can be especially helpful for bug bites, reducing redness, itching, and irritation. Chamomile can also help speed up healing and recovery times.

Lavender - Although best known for its mood-improving and calming effects, the benefits of Lavender essential oil can include reducing pain and itchiness that often comes with bug bites.

Peppermint - Peppermint essential oil is extremely versatile and often used for relieving pain and swelling. When applied to the skin (properly diluted in a carrier oil), it exerts a cooling sensation (which is precisely what you need after being bitten!).

In addition to aiding in stopping that stinging, burning, and itching sensation, Peppermint essential oil may also reduce the risk of the bites becoming infected and speed up the natural healing process.

Tea Tree - A potent antiseptic, Tea Tree essential oil has been used for hundreds of years to treat a variety of skin complaints and is an excellent remedy for bug bites. Studies suggest that Tea Tree oil is a natural antihistamine, reducing the body’s allergic reactions and itching sensations. Many who use Tea Tree for bites say it’s a helpful tool for alleviating swelling and itching.

Witch Hazel - Not an essential oil in the strictest sense of the term, witch hazel is water distilled from the leaves and stems of Hamamelis Virginiana plant. The resulting tonic may prevent bites from becoming infected by fighting bacteria and keeping the injury clean. Witch hazel is also used to reduce inflammation and bruising.

Aloe Vera - Aloe Vera is one of nature’s most versatile plants due to its many healing benefits. Applying Aloe to bug bites can provide great relief and ease painful itching and swelling. The gel within its leaves has been used to assist in treating insect bites and stings for centuries.

How to Blend Essential Oils for Bug Bites & Stings

Secure an empty roll-on bottle.

Add 2 drops of each pure essential oil to the empty roll-on bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with half Aloe Vera and half witch hazel.

…and just like that you’re ready to go! Toss it in your beach bag, or keep it handy in your medicine cabinet.

As with many of our recipes and DIYs, living naturally doesn’t have to be complex.
